Abstract

The Adaptive Array Reduction Method (AARM) is a stencil-based acoustic beamforming array design method. The AARM can use the size of the source plane, array aperture, beamforming frequencies of interest and distance of the array plane to the source plane as inputs to arrive at a customized array. These arrays, when in a customized configuration for specific source regions, have been shown to outperform various types of logarithmic spiral and randomized arrays. To create an AARM array an initial stencil array is needed, from which microphones are systematically reduced to arrive at a desired number of microphones. To date, a single grid-based initial stencil has been used, with a 1 m × 1 m array area and a minimum microphone spacing of 34 mm. In this paper, a thorough investigation of initial stencils is presented, that span the same 1 m × 1 m array area but with widely varying minimum spacings. AARM arrays are derived from these stencils, using a range of beamforming frequencies and simulated source locations to produce a total of 288-AARM arrays. From the analysis presented here, initial stencils with a minimum microphone spacing of 34 mm to 58.2 mm produce the best AARM arrays for acoustic beamforming conditions in small-scale aeroacoustic tests.
