Abstract
In this paper, the effect of uniform porous coating thickness on reducing flow noise in cylinders is investigated using numerical and experimental methods. Numerical simulations are performed using the large-eddy simulation approach with the Smagorinsky sub-grid length-scale model. The Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings technique post-processes the pressure fluctuations to predict the far-field acoustics. A corresponding detailed experimental analysis, performed in an aeroacoustic open jet wind tunnel, is used to validate the numerical method. The main objective of the analysis is to study the influence of a porous coating of different thickness and material around a circular cylinder on the flow field and acoustics.
