Abstract | From a supporting role to architectural visions, structural engineering has emerged as leading architectural design decision making in many respects. A disciplinary a nity to technology and the renaissance of core engineering values o ers a strong base at a time of decreasing resource availability and a rapidly changing idea of the function and purpose of creativity in the design of future built environments. Engineering creativity, which embraces quantitative validation already early in the design process, will provide increasingly strong impetus to future architectural work. In the age of digitally supported collaborative design, teams are learning from each other: engineering values are now found across architectural domains of the design process, while engineering is increasingly incorporating and embracing qualitative and human-oriented design values. This chapter charts contemporary developments in creative structural engineering that will pave the way towards greener and more livable futures. Design savvy structural engineering is identifi ed as a source of new directions in design approaches that employ quantitative and qualitative criteria in new and innovative ways to align design values of historically divergent traditions. |
