Abstract | One of the preconditions to accurately evaluate materials’ fracture behavior is the potential of generating an appropriate pre-crack in them because the method employed for pre-crack generation should not affect the material resistance to crack development. Hence, the pre-crack generation was conducted in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) samples due to their high sensitivity to the crack tip radius, followed by investigating the method employed to generate pre-cracks and its effects on the material’s fracture behavior. Pre-cracked specimens processed by slotting and broaching underwent fracture studies using a newly developed broaching tool. On average, the broaching method required 25% less energy than the slotting method for the crack growth in pre-cracked samples, while the slotting process led to a three times larger radius of the plastic region compared to the broaching process under similar conditions. Thus, broaching leads to a sharper tip and larger stress concentrations at the crack tip, justifying more similarity of the generated cracks through this approach to the ideal cracks in the finite element analyses (FEA) conducted to support the results. Besides, in line with the estimations conducted by the essential work of fracture, scanning electron microscope led to similar results when examining the surfaces of the fractures, highlighting greater accuracy of broaching in fracture tests.
