Abstract | This paper investigates the crashworthiness characteristics of spherical-roof contoured-core sandwich panels under out-of-plane quasi-static loading. Two types of composite materials were chosen to fabricate the novel core structure: self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP) and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials. The hot compression molding method was used to prepare the CFRP and SRPP cores bonded with two CFRP skins as sandwich structures. It was exhibited that the nominal stress of the sandwich structure with CFRP core reached the maximum stress of 0.15 MPa, and the nominal maximum stress of the SRPP core of the sandwich panel was 0.04 MPa. Moreover, it was shown that the sandwich structure with CFRP core was 3.50 and 2.18 times more than the SRPP core on compressive strength and stiffness. Sandwich panel with CFRP core had an average value of 65.64 J and 1.08 kJ/kg on energy absorption (EA) and specific energy absorption (SEA) of crashworthiness indicators, which were 4.34 and 4.10 times higher than the SRPP core. It was summarized that the CFRP core provided better crashworthiness characteristics than the SRPP core on the sandwich structure. In addition, the failure behavior of the sandwich structure with CFRP core was observed fiber fracture, delamination, and debonding between the core and two skins. Sandwich structure with SRPP core was shown the buckling and debonding between the core and two skins. |
