Abstract | Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials are widely concerned for their potential applications. They have been found in some magnetic functional materials due to the magnetovolume effect (MVE), which is intimately associated with spontaneous magnetic ordering. Here, we report a novel MVE material, NdBaCo2O5.5+x , which shows ZTE at low temperatures. With the help of high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (NPD), the underling mechanism of MVE in NdBaCo2O5.5+x is attributed to an isostructural phase transition from a large-volume (LV) phase to a small-volume (SV) phase upon heating. The magnetic ground state of the LV phase is antiferromagnetic with a G-type magnetic structure determined by NPD, while that of the SV phase is ferromagnetic based on the magnetization properties. This discovery further enhances the understanding of the anomalous thermal expansion in cobaltite perovskites. |
